Donation of publicly traded securities

Increase your contribution to the community while reducing your expenses.

In 2006, the government made the gift of publicly traded securities particularly attractive by eliminating the capital gains tax on the sale of these stocks.

TYPES OF DONORS

  • People with a portfolio containing a large number of value-added stocks.

  • People who wish to make a substantial donation while benefiting immediately from tax benefits.

  • People considering a deferred gift (bequest) to ensure attractive tax benefits for their estate.

BENEFITS

  • You receive a charitable receipt for the market value of the shares at the time they are registered in the Centraide brokerage account.

  • You avoid paying the usual 50% capital gains tax on the sale of stocks.

  • You benefit immediately from tax savings that can increase the amount of the donation or reduce its actual cost.
